Prayer to St. Michael

Holy Michael Archangel, defend us in the day of battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

St. Michael the Archangel

Of the many angels spoken of in the Bible, only four are called by name: Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, and Michael. The archangel Michael is the most venerated of all the angels. He is the powerful agent of God who wards off evil from God’s people and delivers peace to them at the end of this life’s mortal struggle.

According to Christian tradition, the history of the world is bounded by two great events: the War in Heaven and the Last Judgement. In both of these episodes, Michael plays a pivotal role.

Michael’s battle with Satan is described in Revelation: “There was a war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon . . . And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil . . .” (Rev. XII, 7-9).

The second role that Michael is commonly presented as playing is as a weigher of souls on the Day of Judgement. An Apocryphal text relates that Michael is so powerful that his intercession can rescue souls from damnation.

St. Michael the Archangel is a warrior who provides an antidote to those stereotypical representations of angels as sweet cherubs. He is the embodiment of the triumphant nature of Truth.
